Vacuum forming
Heating a plastic sheet until soft and using suction to shape it over a mould.

Step 1: Make the mould
The mould (former) is made from wood or foam with smooth, sloped sides.

Step 2: Place the mould
The mould is put on the vacuum former’s platform (platen).

Step 3: Clamp the plastic sheet
A thermoplastic sheet is placed above the mould and clamped tightly.

Step 4: Heat the plastic
The heater warms the plastic until it becomes soft and starts to sag.

Step 5: Raise the mould
The platform lifts the mould up into the soft plastic.

Step 6: Turn on the vacuum
The vacuum pump sucks out the air, pulling the plastic tightly around the mould.
