"BOD"
Approximate quantity of dissolved oxygen required by bacteria to stabilize organic matter.
"Coastal Water"
Open body of water along the country's coastline up to the 200-meter isobath or three-kilometer distance.
"Effluent"
Wastewater flowing out of a plant.
"Inland Water"
Interior body of water with beneficial usage other than public water supply or primary contact recreation.
"Mixing Zone"
Place where effluent mixes with receiving body of water.
"Primary Contact Recreation"
Form of recreation where there is intimate contact of the human body with the water, such as swimming, water skiing, or skin diving.
"Protected Water"
watercourse classified as sources of public water supply and etc.
"Strong Water"
Wastewater whose initial BOD value before treatment is equal to or greater than 3,000 mg/L.
Visual Comparison Method (Platinum Cobalt Scale)
Color method of analysis
Use of Mercury-filled Thermometer
Temperature method of analysis
Objectives of the WQG and GES
Provides guidelines for classification of water bodies, determination of time trends, and evaluation of stages of deterioration.
Scope of WQG
Apply to all water bodies in the country (freshwaters, marine waters, and groundwater).
Scope of GES
Apply to all point sources of pollution.
Class AA
Public Water Supply Class 1- Intended primarily for waters having watersheds
Class A
Public Water Supply Class II- Intended as sources of water supply requiring conventional treatment
Class B
Recreational Water Class I - Intended for primary contact recreation (bathing, swimming, etc.)
DAO 34
Water Quality Guidelines vs General Effluent Standards
Coastal and Marine Waters - Class SD
Marshy/Magrove areas
Secondary parameters
limits used for baseline assessment as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment
GES and Industrial Classification
Requires industries to monitor only significant effluent quality parameters.
GES values
limits are maximum allowable limit.
General Effluent Standards categories
Category I (Protected Waters), Category II (Inland Waters) raw wastewater
WQG
Used for classifying water bodies; determining time trends; evaluating stages of deterioration.
WQG: Scope
Apply to all water bodies in the country
GES: Scope
Apply to all point sources of pollution
