a vowel sound which glides from one vowel to another.
A vowel which doesn't glide (which remains constant) is called a pure vowel (= short and longs vowels)
what to remember about the pronunciation of diphthongs
-length: similar to long vowels
-first part is much longer and stronger than second part e.g. time = /taɪm/: 3⁄4=a and 1⁄4=ɪ and ɪ shorter and quieter

closing: ending in ɪ: eɪ-aɪ-ɔɪ (ɪ is close vowel)
