Dipole-dipole force
An intermolecular force that occurs between polar molecules, where the positive end of one molecule is attracted to the negative end of another molecule.
Ion
A single particle with a net positive or negative charge, attracted to opposite charges.
Dipole
A polarized object with separation of charge, having a positive end and a negative end.
Polar atom
An atom with different regions of charge, resulting in a dipole.
Polar molecule
A molecule with partial positive and partial negative charges, resulting in a dipole.
Dipole-dipole interaction
The force of attraction between two polar molecules, based on the interaction of their dipoles.
Intramolecular force
A force that occurs within a molecule, such as a covalent bond.
Electronegativity
The measure of an atom's ability to attract electrons in a chemical bond.
Polar bond
A bond between atoms with a difference in electronegativity of 0.5 or more, resulting in a dipole.1. Sulfur-oxygen bond:A chemical bond between sulfur and oxygen atoms.
Polar bond
A bond in which there is an unequal sharing of electrons between atoms, resulting in a partial positive and partial negative charge.
Carbon-oxygen bond
A chemical bond between carbon and oxygen atoms.
Dipole moment
A measure of the separation of positive and negative charges in a molecule.
Carbon dioxide (CO2)
A molecule composed of one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms.
Nonpolar
A molecule that has no net dipole moment.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2)
A molecule composed of one sulfur atom and two oxygen atoms.
Bent shape
The molecular geometry of a molecule in which the central atom is surrounded by two bonded atoms and one lone pair, resulting in a bent or V-shaped structure.
Dipole-dipole interactions
Electrostatic forces of attraction between polar molecules.
