how do we learn behaviour?

  • through observing + imitating others around us

  • observing + imitating a beh is more likely to happen if the observer identifies with the model e.g. same sex/age - this is called identification. or if the model is attractive or someone the observer admires

2
New cards

what is vicarious reinforcement?

  • we do not imitate all behaviour we see

  • a beh is more likely to be imitated if the observer sees the model being positively reinforced/rewarded for their beh

  • a beh is less likely to be imitated if the observer sees model is punished for their beh

3

what is mediational processes and what are the 4 processes?

  • Bandura identified 4 mental processes (cognitive) involved in SLT

  • attention (we must notice the beh)

  • retention (we must remember the behaviour)

  • motor reproduction (we must be able to perform the beh)

  • motivation (linked to vic reinforcement)

  • SLT cannot take place without the 4 mental processes in order to imitate beh
