Directional Terms

Terms used to describe relative position (for example, the ribs are anterior to the spine).

Midsagittal Plane

A sagittal plane that divides the body into even left and right halves.

Parasagittal Plane

A sagittal plane that divides the body into uneven left and right halves.

Planes of Reference

Anatomical planes including Frontal Plane, Sagittal Plane, and Transverse Plane.

Dorsal Body Cavity

Cavity that contains & protects fragile nervous system organs.

Cranial Cavity

Cavity inside the skull that encloses the brain.

Vertebral Cavity

Cavity inside the bony vertebral column that encloses the spinal cord.

Ventral Body Cavity

Cavity comprising the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.

Abdominal Cavity

Cavity containing the liver, stomach, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, intestines, and kidneys.

Pelvic Cavity

Cavity containing the bladder, reproductive organs, large intestine (sigmoid colon and rectum).

Fallopian Tube

Where the sperm and egg cell often meet during fertilization; connects the ovary to the uterus.

Uterus

Prepares its lining to nourish a fertilized ovum until birth; if there is no fertilization, the lining sheds during mentstuation.

Cervix

Passage to and from the uterus.

Vagina

A muscular opening where menstrual blood leaves or a baby goes out during birth.

Ovary

Produces and stores egg cells.

Ovum

Female sex cell.

Vas Deferens

A tube that transports mature sperm out of the testes.

Testis

Produces sperm and testosterone.

Seminal Vesicle

Produces seminal fluid that makes up majority of the semen.

Prostate Gland

Also poduces fluid for transporting sperm.

Penis

External male reproductive organ.

Urethra (Male Reproductive System)

A tube from the bladder to the penis, where urine and sperm passes.

Sperm

Male sex cell.

Reproduction

Refers to the process by which organisms create offspring. For humans, it is the only body system that differs between males and females.

Abdominopelvic Cavity Clinical Quadrants

The four clinical quadrants: right upper quadrant, left upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, and left lower quadrant.

9 Anatomical Regions of the Abdominopelvic Cavity

Regions consisting of Right Hypochondriac Region, Epigastric Region, Left Hypochondriac Region, Right Lumbar Region, Umbilical Region, Left Lumbar Region, Right Iliac Region, Hypogastric Region, and Left Iliac Region.

Urinary System

System containing Adrenal Gland, Kidney (Cortex, Medulla, Renal sinus, Renal Pelvis, Renal Capsule), Bladder, Ureter, and Urethra.
