New cards

What are the structures of the first 3 alcohols?

How is hydration used to produce ethanol?

  • Hydration of ethene - Ethene + Water (300 degrees c and 70 atm & phosphoric acid catalyst)

  • Produces a high yield of ethanol.

  • However, requires lots of energy for high temperature, and Ethene is non-renewable.

5
New cards

How is ethanol produced through fermentation?

glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide.

  • in presence of yeast, at 30 degrees celsius.

  • must be in anaerobic conditions.

6
New cards

What are the 2 advantages of producing ethanol through fermentation?

  • Low temperature means it does not require lots of energy.

  • Sugar used comes from plants so is renewable

7
New cards

What is a disadvantage of producing ethanol through fermentation?

The product is an aqueous solution of ethanol (dissolved in water)

Must be purified through distillation which does require energy.
