What are the uses of alcohols?
Fuels
Solvents
Alcoholic drinks.
What are alcohols?
A homologous series with the functional group OH.
What are the structures of the first 3 alcohols?
Ethanol - CH3CH2OH
Propanol - CH3CH2CH2OH
Butanol - CH3CH2CH2CH2OH
How is hydration used to produce ethanol?
Hydration of ethene - Ethene + Water (300 degrees c and 70 atm & phosphoric acid catalyst)
Produces a high yield of ethanol.
However, requires lots of energy for high temperature, and Ethene is non-renewable.
How is ethanol produced through fermentation?
glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide.
in presence of yeast, at 30 degrees celsius.
must be in anaerobic conditions.
What are the 2 advantages of producing ethanol through fermentation?
Low temperature means it does not require lots of energy.
Sugar used comes from plants so is renewable
What is a disadvantage of producing ethanol through fermentation?
The product is an aqueous solution of ethanol (dissolved in water)
Must be purified through distillation which does require energy.
