Cellular Life
Life forms characterized by membrane-bound units that use genetic information to carry out life processes.
Nucleotide (Genetic Analogy)
A basic unit of genetic information whose relationship to genetic code is analogous to the relationship between letters of the alphabet and the English language.
Hierarchy of Genetic Structures
The structural organization where the nucleotide is part of the gene, the gene is part of the chromosome, and the chromosome is part of the organism's genome.
Biological System Component Interactions
The principle that biological systems can have properties that arise from interactions among their components, such that knowing an individual protein structure alone cannot predict whole cell responses during multi-protein interactions.
Cross-Level Biological Influence
The principle stating that changes at one level of biological organization (such as a gene mutation changing a protein) can influence processes at higher levels.
Effect of Chromosome Removal in Eukaryotes
Removing one chromosome from a eukaryotic cell causes the cell to lose part of its genome, including many genes and nucleotides.
Prokaryote
A microscopic organism consisting of a single cell that contains DNA, ribosomes, and a cell membrane, but does not contain a nucleus.
