Leadership
The act to influence behaviour of others or the capacity to influence a group of people towards the realization of a goal.
Robert Tannenbaum's definition of Leadership
The inter-personal influence exercised in a situation and directed through communication process through the attainment of specified goals.
Rauch & Behling's definition of Leadership
The process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement.
Hemphill's definition of Leadership
The behaviour of an individual when he is directing the activities of a group toward a shared goal.
Schein's definition of Leadership
The ability to step outside the culture to start evolutionary change processes that are more adaptive.
Keith Davis's definition of Leadership
The ability to persuade others to seek defined objectives enthusiastically.
Democratic Leaders
Also known as Participative leaders, they act according to the wishes of followers and encourage group members to share ideas and opinions.
Autocratic Leaders
Leaders who dominate and get work done through coercion, command, and fear, dictating all work methods without input from the team.
Persuasive Leaders
Leaders who possess alluring personalities and the ability to convince others to change their actions, decisions, opinions, or thinking.
Creative Leaders
Leaders who encourage ideas from group members, avoid undue pressure, and create a conducive environment to promote creativity.
Intellectual Leaders
Leaders who win the trust of subordinates through their intelligence and expertise in a specific area of company processes.
Institutional Leaders
Leaders who influence their team on account of the stature or position they hold in the organisation.
Charismatic Leaders
Leaders with a form of inter-personal attraction that inspires acceptance; they are dynamic, high-risk takers, and relied upon during crisis.
Transformational Leaders
Leaders responsible for introducing dramatic changes in organisations; they are charismatic and capable of motivating others through trust.

Transactional Leaders
Leaders who focus on compliance with rules and get work done through rewards and punishments, operating on the idea that people are self-motivated in structured environments.
Maturity (Leader Characteristic)
A quality where a leader possesses a high level of emotional quotient, maintains cool temperament, is tolerant, and looks at things objectively.
Empathy
The ability of a leader to visualise things from others’ point of view and understand the needs and aspirations of subordinates.
Vision and Foresight
The ability of a leader to visualize events well in advance through imagination and determination.
Leadership Style
The method in which a leader supervises and directs his team members, or the behaviour pattern exhibited for influencing followers.
Autocratic or Authoritarian Leadership Style
A style where the leader exercises complete control, keeps authority to himself, takes decisions without consultation, and uses coercion.
Participative Leadership Style
Also known as democratic leadership, it involves employees in the decision-making process through consultation, though the leader retains final authority.
Laissez-Faire or Free-Rein Leaders
Leaders who give group members responsibility for setting goals and finding methods, exercising little control and playing a minor role in group activities.
