why is Lent a special time for Christians?
Lent is a special time set aside for Christians to reflect on their lives and their relationship with Christ and his mission on earth.
what is the Christian vocation?
to put others first as Jesus did as priest
to speak on behalf of the poor and powerless as Jesus did as prophet
to exercise stewardship over creation as Jesus did as king
what are the three vows taken by people called to religious life?
poverty
chastity
obedience
what is poverty (religious vow)?
Owning nothing personally in imitation of Christ and depending on the Church for support.
what is chastity (religious vow)?
The ability to harmonise s**ual thoughts and desires, seeing others as God does.
what is obedience (religious vow)?
Imitating Christ by obeying God and placing one's talents and life at the service of the Church.
what are examples of apostolates?
caring for the sick
serving the poor
praying for humanity
why did God promise the people of Israel a Messiah?
Because humanity's relationship with God was damaged by sin. The Messiah would restore that relationship and bring salvation.
what were the commandments and laws that God gave the people of Israel?
Ten Commandments and the Old Law.
These laws guided people to live in holy and moral ways.
how do the Ten Commandments identify responsibilities towards God and others?
The first three commandments teach responsibilities towards God.

The remaining commandments teach responsibilities towards others.

what is the New Law?
The New Law empowered his followers to live as God called.
how did the New Law empower people to live as God called?
As they drew on the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit, they found it easier to keep God’s commandments and laws.

The eight (8) Beatitudes identify the attitudes of Jesus, making them more alert of the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
what is the First Beatitude?
“Blessed are the poor in Spirit. The kingdom of heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:3)

People accept their dependence on God for all their needs, empowering them to realise they are not perfect and repent.

Revealed to change people’s hearts so they are empowered to live the Ten Commandments in imitation of Jesus.

how does Jesus call people to experience happiness and true freedom?
God calls people to grow their spiritual strength by living Jesus’ laws, his two great commandments and the Beatitudes.
what is freedom?
the ability to overcome internal and external pressures in order to make responsible moral choices
what are moral principles?
help people work out right and wrong
includes natural law & 10 commandments
e.g. behaving in loving ways, being merciful, relating to God
what is natural law?
laws that apply to all people because they are part of human nature and accessed by reason
instincts (basic goods) + reason (thinking abilities) = natural law (derived from moral principles)
how can people make responsible moral choices?
having sufficient relevant knowledge & sufficient personal freedom
avoiding internal/external pressures (emotions / peer pressure)
freely choosing actions that → long term happiness
how can people know if their choices are morally good?
using moral principles to judge right/wrong
follow natural law, using reason
following God’s commandments → behaving in God-like ways
how did God begin to restore human freedom?
through covenants, creating a deep relationship with humanity
guiding Israelites from slavery in Egypt to freedom with Him
rebuilding humanity’s relationship through grace/guidance
how is the human desire for freedom experienced?
wanting independence and the ability to make personal choices
feeling frustrated when internal or external pressures limit freedom → asking questions to escape these pressures
what does it mean to take responsibility for one’s actions?
being accountable for the consequences of choices and actions
thinking carefully about how decisions affect yourself and others
what is required for a teenager to make responsible decisions?
by asking:
do i have sufficient relevant knowledge?
(weighing the pros and cons)
do i have sufficient personal freedom?
(unaffected by pressures)
why are responsible choices also moral choices?
responsible choices aim for what is morally good and lead to long-term happiness
immoral choices often focus on short-term pleasure and can cause harm later
why do people find it difficult to make responsible decisions?
they may lack understanding, rush decisions, or be pressured
bad habits can weaken responsible thinking
why do people enter into situations that weaken their ability to make responsible decisions?
using drugs or alcohol can impair judgement and self-control
negative people, strong emotions, or risky situations
why do people need to learn moral principles?
moral principles teach people how to judge right and wrong
they help people apply what is morally good to everyday decisions
how does natural law express the moral principles God gave to people?
natural law is discovered through human reason
reflects the moral principles God placed in human nature
why did God reveal the Ten Commandments and the two great commandments?
to make moral principles clearer because people can become confused about right/ wrong
they guide people to live in ways that lead to true happiness
how did the parents of the human race abuse their God given freedom?
they deliberately disobeyed God and destroyed their original relationship with Him
their rebellion damaged human freedom and harmony
what were the consequences of Adam and Eve disobeying God?
humanity experienced temptation, selfishness, suffering

how do people experience God’s call through creation?
the beauty and power of creation help people become aware of God’s presence
people respond by acknowledging God and communicating with Him
how did God initiate the Sinai Covenant?
God called Moses to lead the Israelites out of slavery and into freedom at Mt Sinai
God made a covenant with the Israelites so they could relate more closely with Him
how did the Sinai Covenant encourage people to relate more closely with God?
the covenant taught the Israelites to obey God, trust Him, and worship Him personally
they learned that God guides, frees, and provides for His people
how did God call humanity through the Israelites?
God formed the Israelites into His people and revealed Himself through the covenant

Vocation
The life calling of every human being, including work, personal growth, and possibly marriage.
Creation
The universe and the various forms of life were created by God.
Work (Christian)
Something that everyone has been created to do, participating in God's creative activity.
Recreation
Renewing one's personal energy, preventing stress and tension.
Discernment
The ability to recognise or understand something more deeply, often leading to a decision.
Eucharist
A sacred celebration where the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ.
Spiritual sacrifice
Offerings that a follower of Jesus gives to the Lord, like prayers or one’s body.
Priest
Ordained ministers who serve the needs of God’s people.
Prophet
A biblical person called by God to speak on God's behalf.
Salvation
God's saving action on behalf of the human race that helps people overcome original sin.
Subdue
Means developing the goodness in creation, rather than exploiting its resources.
Apostolic succession
The process of how the spiritual gifts that Apostles received from Jesus, was passed down to the Bishops.

Parents cooperate in God's creation of their children.
Marriage
A loving and life-giving relationship between one man and one woman.
Sacrament
A visible sign of the invisible presence and action of God.
Apostolate
The work accomplished by ordained, religious people.
Celibate
An unmarried state based on sexual self-denial, to respond to the needs of people who need your love.
Deacon
A group who helps priests with their responsibilities of the Church.
Holy Orders
The sacrament through which God’s mission is continued in the Church.

it comes from being created in the 'image' of God, meaning everyone is called to reflect God's image by contributing to creation

people participate by:
