Democracy
A governmental system in which the sovereign power rests with the people.
Elected representatives
Officials who are responsible for answering to the popular will of the people in a democratic system.
Equal opportunity
A goal of government to secure a chance for people to develop their own abilities.
Majority rule
A principle where government is based on the people’s representatives, while simultaneously respecting the rights of minorities.
Free and open elections
Elections in which every citizen has the right to vote, every vote has equal weight, and candidates can freely express their views.
Political parties
Groups that choose candidates for office, respect the voters’ decision in elections, and act as loyal opposition.
Citizen participation
A condition for democracy where citizens participate fully in civic life to maintain a strong system.
Stable economy
An economic environment involving growth and a large middle class that helps strengthen a democratic system.
Public school system
An educational system open to all people that helps promote democracy.
Social consensus
When the people accept democratic values, such as individual liberty and equality for all.
Network of voluntary organizations
Economic, religious, and other groups that exist independent of government and help a democracy to flourish.
