Cell sap
The liquid contained in the vacuole of a plant cell, which has a lower concentration of water (lower water potential) than a solution outside the cell with a higher water concentration.
Osmosis
The process by which water enters the plant cell through the partially permeable cell membrane when placed in a solution with a higher water potential.
Turgid
The condition of a plant cell after it expands or swells due to water entering the cell.
Inelastic cell wall
The rigid outer structure that protects the plant cell and prevents it from bursting as the vacuole increases in size and pushes the cytoplasm against it.
Turgor
The turgidity of the cell filled with water.
Turgor pressure
The pressure exerted by the water inside the vacuole against the cell components and cell wall.
