How did the Suez Canal put Egypt in debt?
Britain loans money to build the canal that Egypt cannot afford.  When Egypt cannot pay back the loan, Britain buys the canal.  They now own a strategic location & profitable entity.

focus shifted to East Africa where the Islamic slave trade already existed, Brits had a large degree of success stopping the Atlantic slave trade, not perfect though

Since Britain outlawed the slave trade and was using its navy to stop the Atlantic slave trade, much of the slave trading in Africa shifted to East Africa (to the Islamic slave trade)
