Thermal Energy
Total kinetic energy of particles in a substance.
Heat Energy
The transfer of thermal energy from a hotter object to a colder object.
Conduction
Heat transfer through direct contact between particles.
Example of Conduction
Touching a metal spoon sitting in hot soup.
Convection
Heat transfer through fluids (liquids or gases) by the movement of the fluid itself.
Example of Convection
Boiling water - hot water rises, cooler water sinks.
Radiation
Heat transfer through electromagnetic waves, without needing matter.
Example of Radiation
Feeling heat from the Sun on your skin.
Conductor
A material that allows heat to move through it easily.
Examples of Conductors
Metals like copper and aluminum.
Insulator
A material that slows down or blocks heat transfer.
Examples of Insulators
Rubber, wood, plastic, and air.
Trick to remember Conduction
Conduction = Contact (both start with C!)
Trick to remember Convection
Convection = Currents (moving fluids).
Trick to remember Radiation
Radiation = Rays (energy moves in rays, like sunlight).
