Polar covalent bonds
Bonds in which electrons are not shared equally between atoms, creating partial charges; in water, oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen.
Electronegativity
The tendency of an atom to attract electrons toward itself in a chemical bond; in water, oxygen is more electronegative than hydrogen.
Water (H2O)
A molecule with two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen; its O–H bonds are polar, giving rise to partial charges.
Partial negative charge
A partial negative charge on an atom caused by unequal sharing of electrons in a polar covalent bond; in water, oxygen carries this charge.
Partial positive charge
A partial positive charge on an atom caused by unequal sharing of electrons in a polar covalent bond; in water, hydrogen carries this charge.
Hydrogen bond
A weak attraction between a partially negative atom (often oxygen) in one molecule and a partially positive hydrogen atom in another molecule.
