Greater Curve - R10
Where is the spleen?
What side?
Under costal arch at R9-10
Left side - attached to greater curvature of stomach
What are all the numbers?
Where are the kidneys?
Right (more cranial) 2 last ribs and L1. Its posterior edge is explorable rectally.
The left : Last rib to L1-L3.
Where are the ovaries?
Ovaries have almost a symmetrical position at the L3 about 15 cm under the lumbar arch
Where is the duodenum - descending?
Btw caecum (caecum runs from T17 to L4&5 on rhs) and the right end of the liver'
Abdominocentesis
Where do we perform it?
Ventral abdomen is surgically prepared on midline at the most dependant point, approximately 10cm caudal of the xiphi-sternum
Abdominocentesis
What tubes do we use for sampling? What are each of their purposes?
Na EDTA tube (purple) for cytology,
Heparinised tube (green) for lactate measurement
Plain (red) tube for bacteriology
Abdominocentesis
Normal values for abdominocentesis?
Abdo US
What are these two structures?
Where would we put the probe to find these?
What is this view called?
Top - Spleen
Bottom - Left Kidney
Place the probe in the 17th intercostal space (or paralumbar fossa)
Nephrosplenic Window
Abdo US
What are these two structures?
Where would we put the probe to find these?
What is this view called?
Arrow - Splenic vein
Box - Gas filled stomach
Place the probe sequentially at the levels of the 10th-15th intercostal spaces in the middle one third (dorsoventrally)on the left side
Gastrosplenic window
What are all the organs?
Where is the Diaphragm?
Where do we auscultate the lungs?
Btw ICS 4-16
Equine GIT
List in order where the git moves? (Start from stomach)
Stomach → Duodenum → Jejenum → Ileum → Caecum → Right Ventral Colon → Sternal Flexure → Left Ventral Colon → Pelvic Flexure → Left Dorsal Colon → Diaphragmatic Flexure → Right Dorsal Colon → Descending colon → Rectum
Abdominocentesis
Putting in a teat cannula?
Make a hole by pushing through the scalpel blade into a folded up dry swab
Place teat cannula through said hole
Aim on midline and perpendicular to skin with teat cannula
Have middle fingers pressing into skin (act as resistance so we don’t go too deep)
Push - should feel a ‘pop’ or loss of pressure when we are in the right spot
Abdominocentesis
How to make the incision?
Aseptic prep with chlorhex on the ventral midline 10cm caudal to xiphisternum
1-2mls of lidocaine is instilled subcutaneously and then into the underlying linea alba
Get scalpel blade, wrap in its wrapper (like a makeshift handle) and make a cut
What are all the organs?
US
Where to visualise the duodenum?
15th-17th ICS on right dorsal side (May vary i guess?)
See 5
Just go ok when done
ok
How many ribs does a horse have on each side?
18 ribs on one side
What is this spot?
What is it used for?
Left Paralumbar Fossa
Can see spleen and kidney (If kindey not visible we potentially have Left Dorsal Displacement of colon)
What is this window?
What can we see?
Left Middle Third Window
Normally - the spleen and small intestine
What is 7?
What is the location
What is it for?
Cranial ventral Thorax
The intercostal space immediately caudal to the triceps muscle
to visualise the cranioventral abdomen, including the liver.
Assess for the presence of pleural effusion as well
Right paralumbar fossa - US
What do we see?
The duodenum btw the right kidney and the caecum base
just write ok
ok
