2 types of experimental hypothesis

Alternate hypothesis and null hypothesis

Splitting alternate hypothesis

one-tailed (directional) and two-tailed (non-directional)

Alternate hypothesis

Predicts the independent variable will impact the dependent variable

One-tailed (directional) hypothesis

Make when you have a good idea which direction the change will occur based off previous research

Two-tailed (non-directional) hypothesis

Make when you think there will be a change but are not sure which direction it will occur- this is often due to lack of research

Key words in one-tailed (directional) hypotheses

Increase, decrease, move up, reduce, improve (words that state a direction)

Key words in two-tailed (non-directional) hypotheses

Affect, influence, manipulate, difference

What would a good hypothesis have

2 independent variables and a dependent variable

Null hypothese

Predicts that the independent variable will have no effect on the dependent variable

How to write an hypothesis

Include both independent variable and a dependent variable

Include what the dependent variable is measured in

Include there will be a significant difference in the independent and dependent variable

Non directional hypotheses must have the word difference in it
