Cation
positive, usually metal or polyatomic ion
Anion
negative, a non metal (or polyatomic ion)
Naming Anions (negatively charged)
change ending of monatomic anions (usually non-metals) to “-ide” and add the word “ion” after
Don’t change the ending of polyatomic anions but memorize those indicated by the study guide
o= oxygen atom → O2-
oxide ion
N= Nitrogen atom → N3-
Nitride Ion
NO3-
nitrate ion
Naming Cations (Positive ions)
The only polyatomic cation to memorize is NH4+= ammonium ion
Cations with only one charge are just the element name with ion (NA+) Sodium Ion
Cations with more than one possible charge are the element name, followed by a roman numeral in parenthesis for the positive charge, and ending in “ion”
