You need to be able to identify respiratory devices and equipment used for oxygen, airway clearance, airway expansion and airway management. You will also make equipment choices to treat the diseases utilize we have recently studied: pneumonia, pulmonary edema, COPD and asthma.

Be able to identify items on a table and know name of the oxygen device, its liter flow, and when to use it (for mild, moderate, or severe/emergency hypoxemia)
Nasal cannula, 1 - 6 LPM, for mild to moderate hypoxemia, ~ 24 - 44 % FiO2
Simple mask, 5 - 10 LPM, for moderate hypoxemia, ~ 35 - 50% FiO2
NRB, 10 LPM or more, for emergent and significant hypoxemia, ~ 60 - 80% FiO
OxyMask** - this is an all-purpose oxygen device that runs as low as 1 LPM and up to 15+ liters, for many types of hypoxemia
Airway Clearance/Bronchial Hygiene
These devices can be used for patients who need assistance clearing excess secretions out of their lungs. Anyone who has a weak cough, neuromuscular weakness, or a disease process like pneumonia or COPD that produces excess secretions, increases the patient's WOB and makes it harder for patient to oxygenate. Devices used to treat these problems include the following:
Airway Clearance/Bronchial Hygiene Devices
Flutter valve
Acapella
IPV
Metaneb
Cough Assist
Vest (High Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation)
Oral suction (Yankauer)
Airway Expansion
These devices are used to open the airways for patients who have collapsed, partially collapsed, or obstructed upper/lower airways. If a patient has atelectasis (post surgery), excess fluids (pulmonary edema), or inflammation from the diseases we studied (pneumonia or pulmonary edema), the devices below can be used to treat these problems. Be able to select specific devices to treat a disease process.
Airway Expansion Devices
PAP therapies
Incentive Spirometry
IPV and Metaneb (can do both bronchial hygiene and airway expansion)
IPPB
CPAP, NIV (typically for OSA, pulmonary edema, other diseases you'll learn in the future)
Airway Management for Emergencies
These devices are used in airway emergencies. Be able to identify the name of the device when you see it on the table and know what it is used for.
Nasal pharyngeal airway (NPA)
Oral pharyngeal airway (OPA)
Laryngeal mask airway (LMA)
Endotracheal tube
Stylet
Laryngoscopes
AMBU bag
Yankauer
