Pronormoblast (Rubriblast)
The largest RBC precursor featuring a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm (N:C) ratio, round fine chromatin, and deeply basophilic (blue) cytoplasm, with a duration of approximately 24hrs.
Basophilic Normoblast (Prorubricyte)
An RBC precursor smaller than a pronormoblast, characterized by coarser chromatin and intensely basophilic cytoplasm, lasting for approximately 24hrs.
Polychromatic Normoblast (Rubricyte)
A smaller RBC precursor featuring condensed chromatin and gray-blue cytoplasm containing both RNA and hemoglobin, with a duration of approximately 30hrs.
Orthochromatic Normoblast (Metarubricyte)
An RBC precursor stage with a very condensed, pyknotic nucleus ready for extrusion and pink cytoplasm where hemoglobin predominates, lasting approximately 48hrs.
Reticulocyte
An anucleate red blood cell stage containing residual RNA and cytoplasm displaying polychromasia (bluish tint), which spends 1–2days in the marrow before entering circulation.
Mature Erythrocyte
A biconcave disc measuring approximately 7–8μm without a nucleus, featuring salmon-pink, hemoglobin-rich cytoplasm and a lifespan of approximately 120days.
Pyknotic nucleus
The highly condensed nuclear structure ejected from an orthochromatic normoblast during erythrocyte maturation.
