ESSAY

views of the nature of man

The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde depicts man’s nature as inherently subjective; each character is different, but the separation of the good and evil will bring ultimate destruction.

·      separate Jekyll and Hyde, the good and the evil- for example, commits evil (murder, trample) as Hyde and keeps a good reputation as Jekyll

·      Utterson- tries to be good, get will fixed, check on Jekyll, concerned for him

·      Lanyon- tries to be good, help Jekyll, get drawer contents

·      Jekyll starts to give into the evil of Hyde, allowing him to take over, switch becomes involuntary, causes distress

·      Jekyll ultimately ends his own life
