views of the nature of man

The story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde depicts man’s nature as inherently subjective; each character is different, but the separation of the good and evil will bring ultimate destruction.

·      separate Jekyll and Hyde, the good and the evil- for example, commits evil (murder, trample) as Hyde and keeps a good reputation as Jekyll

·      Utterson- tries to be good, get will fixed, check on Jekyll, concerned for him

·      Lanyon- tries to be good, help Jekyll, get drawer contents

·      Jekyll starts to give into the evil of Hyde, allowing him to take over, switch becomes involuntary, causes distress

·      Jekyll ultimately ends his own life

This story has multiple themes such as friendship, sin is destructive, and a desire for the unknown and the pleasures of sin.

·      Lanyon getting the drawer for Jekyll, this only feeds  into Jekyll’s evil

·      Utterson trying to help Jekyll, with his will, concern for him and trying to get the will fixed, make sure Dr. Jekyll is okay

·      Poole’s concern for Jekyll, thinks he was murdered, breaks down the door

·      Jekyll suffered from the effects of being Hyde, involuntary switch, brought guilt, fearing Hyde himself and the evil he had done
