Atom

The smallest part of an element that can exist.

Element

A substance made up of only one type of atom.

Compound

A substance made up of two or more types of atoms chemically combined together.

Equation

A scientific statement that uses chemical names or symbols to sum up what happens in a chemical reaction

Reactant

The substances that react together in a chemical reaction

Product

The substances produced in a chemical reaction

Mixture

Consists of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined together

Filtration

A separation technique used to separate insoluble solids from soluble solids

Crystallisation

A separation technique used to separate soluble solids from a solution by evaporating the solvent

Simple distillation

A procedure by which two liquids with different boiling points can be separated

Fractional distillation

A method of separating a mixture of substances according to their different boiling points

Chromatography

A separation technique used to separate a mixture of chemicals by distributing the components between two phases
