Cell
Basic unit of all forms of life
Cell membrane
Thin, flexible layer that surrounds all cells; regulates, what enters and leaves the cell
Nucleus
The center of an atom, which contains the protons and neutrons; in cells, the structure that contains the genetic material in the form of DNA
Nucleolus
Located inside of the nucleus; sight where DNA is concentrated when making ribosomal RNA
chromatin
DNA bound to protein, when a cell divide chromatin contains to form chromosomes, passed from one generation to the next
nuclear envelope
Surrounds the nucleus and has two membranes; has pores
Nuclear pores
on the nuclear envelope and allow material to move in and out
Cell wall
Strong, supporting layer around the cell membrane in some cells (usually in plants)
Chloroplast
Organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy (site of photosynthesis)
Cytoplasm
in eukaryotic cells, all cellular contents outside of the nucleus; in prokaryotic cells, all of the cells contents
Cytoskeleton
Network of protein elements in a eukaryotic cell that gives the solid shape and internal organization and is involved in movement
Endoplasmic reticulum
internal membrane system found in eukaryotic cells; place where lipid components of cell membrane are assembled
golgi apparatus
organelle in cells that modifies sorts and packages proteins and other material from the endoplasmic reticulum for storage in the cell or release outside the cell
lipid bilayer
flexible, double layered sheet that makes up cell membrane, informs a barrier between the cell and the surroundings
Lysosome
Cell organelle that breaks down lipids, carbohydrates, and protein proteins into small molecules that could be used by the rest of the cell
Mitochondrion
cell organelle that converts the chemical energy stored in food into compounds that are more convenient for the cell to use
Organelle
specialized structure that performs important cellular functions within a cell
Ribosome
cell organelle, consisting of RNA and protein found throughout the cytoplasm in the cell; the site of proteins
Vacuole
cell organelle that stores materials, such as water, salts, protein and carbohydrates
Cristae
recycles and decompose, proteins fats and carbs
Rough ER
Has ribosomes
Smooth ER
does not have ribosomes fantasize membrane lipids help with detoxification of drugs? not have ribosomes fantasize membrane lipids help with detoxification of drugs?
Central vacuole
only in plant cells and centrally located, filled with liquid, allows plans to support heavy structures because of pressure
contractile vacuole
in aquatic unicellular organisms found outside of cell membrane and pumps water out of cell
