Thesis Point 1 - Lack of effective representation cos of FPTP
Plurality system creates majority of ppl not being represented by person they want. 2010 2/3 of MPs didn’t have a majority. Hampstead and Kilburne - 34% needed to win.
Anti Thesis Point 1 - Pressure groups represent minorities
Large membership, GreenPeace has 3.5 milly members. They can have major influence on the Govt. XR 2019 protests
Thesis Point 2 -lack of consistent particiption
AV = 42%. EU = 35% in 2014. Skews the outcome as not majority of populace so its unrepresentative and can threaten UK D+P
Anti Thesis Point 2 - Occurence of high turnout
When the vote matters turnout goes up. The electorate feels they can change stuff. 84% in Indy ref in 2014. 72% for Brexit in 2016
Thesis Point 3 -Inequality of the House of Lords
92 Heritary peers. 26 Lords spirituals but no other religious representation. Still unelecet and apointed by the PM. - Not rlly democratic
Anti Thesis Point 3 - Significant reforms to the House of Lords
1998 HOL reform act removed hereditary peers. There’s an increase of crossbench peers. Their purpose is to scrutinise legislation not represent ppl.
