Forebrain
Cerebral hemispheres and deep structures.
Corpus Callosum
Largest white matter tract in the brain and connects the right and left hemispheres.
Diencephalon
Thalamus, hypothalamus and subthalamus.
Forebrain
Cerebral hemispheres聽and the diencephalon.
What direction is the brainstem to the diencephalon?
Caudal
What are the three parts of the brainstem?
Midbrain, pons, medulla.
What is the largest fibre bundle found in the midbrain?
Large fibre located on the ventral aspect of the midbrain. These fibres connect the forebrain to all caudal structures.
What is the name of the surface landmark that separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe?
The central sulcus聽separates the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe.
What is the name of the surface landmark that separates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes?
The lateral fissure separates the temporal lobe from the frontal and parietal lobes.
What is the name of the surface landmark that separates the occipital lobe from the parietal lobe?
The parietal occipital sulcus聽separates the occipital lobe from the parietal lobe.
What is the limbic lobe?
The limbic lobe is a continuous strip of cortex that swings around the surface of the brain, spanning the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes,聽and is related to the limbic system.
What is the name of the fluid-filled cavities within the brain?
The ventricular system is a series of cavities within the brain that contain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
What are the lateral ventricles?聽
The lateral ventricles are bilateral C-shaped ventricles that span the cerebral hemispheres. The anterior horn of the lateral ventricles extend into the frontal and parietal lobes, the posterior horn extends into the occipital lobe and the inferior horne.
What structure connects the third and fourth ventricles?
The cerebral aqueduct聽connects the third and fourth ventricle.
What structure does the fourth ventricle 'close off' into?
The fourth ventricle closes off into the central canal.
What is white matter?
White matter is the sum of all myelinated axons or tracts.
What is grey matter?
Grey matter is the sum of all nerve cell bodies.
