Phonology
The study of the mental representation of speech sounds and how sounds are categorized.
Phonetics
The study of physical properties of speech sounds and how speech sound are produced.
Articulation of Speech Sounds
Speech sounds are made by shaping the airflow using the vocal tract and articulators like the lips, tongue, and velum.
Vowels
Air flows freely.
Consonants
Some part of the mouth blocks or restricts the airflow.
Voicing (Consonant Feature)
Whether the vocal cords vibrate or not.
Place of Articulation (Consonant Feature)
Where the airflow is obstructed.
Manner of Articulation (Consonant Feature)
Manner in which the airflow is obstructed.
Voiced Sounds
Vocal cords vibrate.
Voiceless Sounds
Vocal cords do not vibrate.
Stops
Complete stop of airflow, then release.
Fricatives
Airflow is forced through a narrow space, creating friction.
Bilabial
Sound produced by obstructing airflow at the lips.
Alveolar
Sound whose place of articulation is the alveolar ridge, just behind the teeth.
Velar
Sound whose place of articulation is the velum (the soft tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth).
Alveopalatal
Tongue near hard palate
Phoneme
An abstract mental representation of a distinctive sound in a language; smallest unit that makes a difference in meaning.
Allophones
The set of predictable phonetic variants of a phoneme; physical realizations of the same phoneme.
Voice Onset Time (VOT)
Time between release of burst and onset of vocal fold vibration.
