Element
A substance that contains only one type of atom and cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means.
Compound
A substance formed when two or more different elements bond together in a specific ratio.
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically bonded and can be separated physically.
Physical State
The classification of matter based on its form: solid, liquid, or gas.
Atoms
The smallest units of an element that retain the properties of that element.
Molecules
Groups of two or more atoms bonded together.
Separation of Compounds
Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means, but not by physical means.
Properties of Compounds
Compounds exhibit different properties than their individual component elements.
Examples of Compounds
Common examples include water (H₂O) and table salt (NaCl).
Examples of Mixtures
Common examples include salad, air, and pizza.
Separation of Mixtures
Mixtures can be separated physically and retain many properties of their components.
