ANATOMICAL TERMS
The language of anatomy that describes the location, orientation, and movement of body parts and structures.
Often based on their positioning on direction in relation to a standard position.
Superior (cranial)
upper or above
Inferior (caudal)
lower or below
Anterior (ventral)
front of the body
Posterior (dorsal)
back of body
Proximal
Nearer to the trunk of the body
Distal
Farther from the trunk of the body
Medial
toward the midline
Lateral
away from the midline
ANATOMICAL POSITION
Refers to the specific body orientation used when describing an individual's anatomy.
Consists of the body standing upright.

lying on back, facing upward
Flexion
Decreases the angle of a joint
extension
increases the angle of a joint
Abduction
moving away from the midline
Adduction
movement toward the midline
Rotation
turning around an axis
Circumduction
circular movement
Coronal (frontal) plane
divides body into anterior and posterior
Sagittal plane
divides body into left and right
transverse plane
divides the body into superior and inferior parts
Elevation
raising your scapula
Depression
lowering your scapula
Dorsiflexion
bending of the foot or the toes upward
plantar flexion
bends the foot downward at the ankle
