Point Source
A single, identifiable source of a pollutant, such as a smokestack or waste discharge pipe.
Nonpoint Source
Diffused sources of pollution that are difficult to identify, such as pesticide spraying or urban runoff.
Examples of Point Sources
Animal waste runoff from a CAFO, emissions from the smokestack of a coal power plant, and the BP Oil Spill.
Examples of Nonpoint Sources
Urban runoff, pesticides sprayed on agricultural fields, and runoff from multiple locations contributing to pollution.
Pollutants vs. Pollution
Pollutants are specific substances harmful to the environment, while pollution is a vague term for any harmful substance.
