Acid
Donates an H+ (hydrogen ion).
Reaction of acid with metals
A type of chemical reaction where a metal reacts with an acid to form a salt and a gas.
Reaction of acid with carbonates
A type of chemical reaction where a carbonate reacts with an acid to form a salt, water, and a gas.
Chemical reactions: reactants and products
The reactants are on the left-hand side, and the products are on the right-hand side.
Aqueous solution
The cation and anion components of a substance when it is dissolved in water.
Spectator ions
Ions that do not participate in the reaction and are excluded from the net ionic equation.
Quantifying Chemical Reactions
Quantitatively describing a chemical reaction by measuring the amounts of reactants and products.
Molar mass
Have values on the periodic table that tell us how much mass one mole of a substance has.
Mole
A universal count of the number of items
Stoichiometric coefficients
The ratios of substances in a chemical equation.
Limiting reagent
The reactant present in the least amount that limits the amount of product that can be formed
Percent yield
The ratio of the actual yield to the theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage.
Decomposes
Breaks apart.
Actual yield
Experimentally collected.
Theoretical yield
Is calculated by assuming 100% conversion.
