NSMV Propulsion Frequency Variation
The process of varying frequency to the propulsion motor by means of pulse wave modulation at the INV.
INV Grounding Discharge Time
A 10 minute period required after grounding the INV for residual magnetism and capacitors to discharge to earth.
Key Interlocks
Devices on the HV switchboard and main drive used to control access to individual parts and promote a safe order of operations.
NSMV Maneuvering Bus Configuration
A split bus configuration run with two generators.
INV Thyristor Cooling
The use of Deionized Water to cool the thyristors of the INV.
Overall Heat Transfer Equation
Q=UA△T
Positive Air Pressure Purpose
Maintenance of pressure in an air-conditioned accommodation space to prevent the ingress of external odors, exhaust gases, and unconditioned outside air.
Air Handling Unit (AHU)
A component in a marine ventilation system used to filter, heat or cool, and distribute conditioned air to specific shipboard zones.
Free Surface Effect
The phenomenon in a partially filled tank that creates a virtual rise in the ship's center of gravity, thereby reducing overall stability.
Split-Plant Engine Room Configuration
A design for redundancy utilizing a massive, watertight and fire-rated longitudinal or transverse steel bulkhead to separate systems.
Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
A digital system used to track running hours, generate preventative work orders, and manage spare parts inventory.
Megger Test
An insulation resistance test that measures the electrical resistance of motor windings to ground to verify insulation integrity.
Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM)
A maintenance program where scheduling is based on the actual physical condition of machinery measured through diagnostic testing.
HV-LOTO (6.6kV)
A High-Voltage Lockout/Tagout procedure requiring racking out the breaker and applying physical earthing/grounding straps.
Tandem Propulsion Configuration
An arrangement of propulsion motors on the NSMV that provides massive torque and redundancy to the single propeller shaft line.
Anti-Blackout Limitation
An automated function of the Power Management System that prevents a ship blackout by reducing propulsion demand when motors exceed online generator capacity.
Hospital Ward Infection Control
The practice of exhausting more air than is supplied to create a negative pressure environment, preventing pathogens from escaping into passageways.
EPA Section 608 Compliance
A regulation requiring the use of a certified recovery machine to pump down the system and recover refrigerant before opening a refrigeration compressor.
Loadicator (CargoMax)
Stability software used to simulate and calculate a ship's draft, trim, and Metacentric Height (GM) before moving HA/DR cargo or ballast.
Infrared Thermography
A diagnostic CBM tool most effective for identifying loose, overheating electrical connections inside a live switchboard panel.
Galley Grease Trap
A device used to prevent heavy grease buildup from solidifying and clogging the ship's main sanitary piping and macerator systems.
Aqueous Potassium Carbonate (APC)
A wet chemical fire suppression system designed to protect deep fat fryers and griddles by saponifying hot grease.
Soda Dispenser Dual-Check Backflow Preventers
Vented safety devices that prevent carbonic acid from backing up into copper piping and leaching toxic levels of copper into drinking water.
Fire Indication Signal
A continuous blast of the whistle for at least 10 seconds supplemented by continuous ringing of general alarm bells for at least 10 seconds.
Lined Type Fire Hoses
The specific type of fire hose required for use within the machinery spaces of cargo vessels.
Latent Heat
The heat given to or given up by a substance during a change of state.
Threshold Limit Value
The highest concentration of a harmful substance to which a person may be exposed without danger to health.
Certificate of Inspection
A document describing the lifesaving equipment located aboard a vessel.
Muster List
Also known as a Station Bill, this document describes an individual's specific duties during a fire.
Sea Anchor
A cone shaped bag used to slow down the wind drift effect of a vessel or survival craft.
Arterial Bleeding
Blood flowing from a cut artery characterized as appearing bright red and moving in spurts.
First Aid
The emergency treatment of an injury at the scene.
