Algebra Basics Vocabulary

Vocabulary flashcards introducing foundational algebraic concepts including parts of a term, classifications of expressions by term count, constant terms, and ordering of exponents.

Coefficient

The number located in the front of a variable in an algebraic term.

Variable

The letter in an algebraic term representing a quantity that can change.

Exponent

The power placed on a variable in an algebraic term, sometimes referred to as an indicee.

Monomial

An algebraic expression that consists of exactly one term.

Binomial

An algebraic expression that consists of exactly two terms.

Trinomial

An algebraic expression that consists of exactly three terms.

Constant term

A term in an algebraic expression that does not contain a variable and cannot change.

Polynomial

An algebraic expression that has more than three terms, derived from "poly" meaning many.

Descending order

Arranging the terms of an algebraic expression by their exponents from largest to smallest.

Ascending order

Arranging the terms of an algebraic expression by their exponents from smallest to largest.
