Basic legal concepts

Law

A set of rules imposed on all members of the community that are officially recognized, binding, and enforceable in the courts.

Customs

Patterns of behavior among people in a society or group that are habits and traditions, not enforceable by law.

Rules

Made by individuals or a group to maintain conduct in certain situations, only apply to people in that group, and can have consequences for being broken.

Just laws

Laws that allow fair treatment and outcomes for everyone and recognize and respect human rights.

Justice

The fair and impartial treatment of all people under the law, achieved through equality, fairness, and access to the legal system.

Procedural fairness

Fairness in the processes used to resolve disputes, including the right to be heard and the right to an unbiased decision-maker.

Rule of law

Requires that no one is above the law, including those who make and enforce it.

Anarchy

The absence of laws and government, often occurring after a disaster or war.

Tyranny

One person holding absolute power over citizens in a country, often imposing severe penalties for violations of the law.
