Read all directions and follow directions
exactly as they are written.
Never perform investigations
your teacher has not authorized.
When in doubt,
ask your instructor
Take care not to spill any materials, but if a spill does occur
ask your teacher about proper cleanup.
Never pour chemicals or other substances into
sink or trash container.
Never eat, drink, or bring food
into the lab.
Report all accidents immediately
no matter how minor
Be aware of the location of the
first-aid kit, fire blanket, and eye wash station.
Never reach over an
open flame.
When heating a test tube or bottle,
point the opening away from you and others.
Never heat
a closed container.
Never heat a chemical
you are not instructed to heat.

A hypothesis must be testable.

Experiments

Experiment Setup:

Independent
the variable that is changed during the experiment
Dependent
the variable that is observed during the experiment (result of changing the independent variable)

During the experiment
data is recorded - usually in a data table
Data can be
qualitative, quantitative, or a combination of both.
Analyzing data may involve
mathematical calculations, graphing, or even identifying patterns.
After all of the data has been analyzed
a conclusion is drawn.
Theory:
An explanation about the natural world, not a guess, based on hypothesis and observations supported by testing. It answers how and why.
Law
Used to describe a natural phenomenon which has been tested over a long period of time under different conditions.
