Covalent bond
A type of bond where atoms share electrons.
Coordinate Covalent Bond
A bond where one atom provides both electrons for a shared pair.
Bond Energy
A measure of how strong a bond is; more energy indicates a stronger bond.
Sigma bond
The first bond formed between two atoms in a double bond, always stronger than a pi bond.
Double bond
A bond involving two pairs of shared electrons between atoms, stronger than a single bond.
Pi bond
A bond formed by the side-to-side overlap of p-orbitals, typically weaker than sigma bonds.
Polyatomic ions
Ions that consist of more than one atom.
Balance charge
The process of ensuring that the total charge of an ion or molecule is neutral.
Example of balancing charge: NO3
Nitrate ion which has a -1 charge.
