Track and Field
Athletic events divided into three core categories: Running, Jumping, and Throwing.
Sprint Races
Short-distance races (e.g., 60m, 100m, 200m, 400m) where the main goal is to run as fast as possible.
Lane Discipline
The rule that sprinters must stay in their designated lanes during short sprints, where crossing into other lanes can result in disqualification.
8 Lanes
The most common and official standard in short distance running track.
Starting Commands
The official sequence for initiating a sprint race: "On your marks", "Set", "Go!" (or a starting gun).
False Start
Moving or leaving before the gun sounds, which results in disqualification from the race.
The Approach Run
The run-up before a long jump, which should be fast and accelerating to build maximum horizontal speed.
The Take-Off
The rule in long jump requiring athletes to take off using one foot only, driving off the take-off board.
Foul Jump
A long jump ruled invalid when an athlete steps over the take-off line/board, resulting in a score of zero meters.
Approach Phase
The first phase of the long jump, consisting of sprinting down the runway to build maximum controlled speed.
Take-off Phase
The second phase of the long jump, involving planting the driving foot on or before the board to transition horizontal speed into vertical/forward lift.
Flight Phase
The third phase of the long jump, involving maintaining balance in the air using techniques like the "hang" or "sail" and preparing the body for landing.
Landing Phase
The fourth phase of the long jump, involving landing in the sand pit on both feet with knees bent to absorb impact, followed by exiting forward or to the side/back.
