primary crime scene
the specific location where a criminal act of the main part of a crime actually took place
secondary crime scene
any location subsequent or related to a crime where physical evidence is found, but the core illegal act did not actually take place there
rough sketch
a hand-drawn, unscaled, preliminary diagram created at a crime scenes to record the layout, dimensions, and spatial relationship of physical evidence
finished/final sketch
a precise, scale- drawn diagram of a crime scenes created from rough field notes and measurements for courtroom presentation
physical evidence
any tangible object, material, or substance found at a crime scene that helps establish the facts of a case, reconstruct events, or link a suspect to a crime
bindle
a clean sheet of paper folded into a secure packet to collect, store, and transport tiny trance evidence without loss or contamination
chain of custody
the chronological documentation and tracking of physical or digital evidence from the moment it is collected at a crime scene until it is present in court
circumstantial evidence
indirect physical proof that needs a logical inference to connect a scientific finding to a fact of a crime
direct evidence
proof that establishes a fact immediately without needing any logical guesswork
class evidence
material of physical proof that connects an item of person to a border group or category, rather than a single specific source
individual evidence
any material or trait that can be linked to a single, specific source or person with a high degree of certainty
standard/reference sample
physical evidence with a known origin that is collected for comparison against unknown or questioned crime scene evidence
forensic comparison
an analytical process where an examiner compares an unknown crime scene sample with a known standard to see if they share a common orgin
forensic identification
the application of scientific methods and technology to identify specific objects, materials, or individuals from physical evidence left at a crime scene or accident.
