Modelong SPEAKING
A model developed by Dell Hymes (1974) to recognize the dynamic nature of language, tone, and structure based on audience, purpose, and context.
Setting & Scene (S)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to where and when communication occurs.
Participants (P)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to who is involved in the communication.
Ends (E)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to the objective or purpose of the interaction.
Act Sequence (A)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to how the communication is performed.
Key (K)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to the tone of the communication.
Instrumentalities (I)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to the form and style of the communication.
Norms (N)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to whether the communication is free or limited.
Genre (G)
A component of the SPEAKING model referring to the type of situation.
Kinesika (Kinesics)
A form of non-verbal communication referring to body movements, facial expressions, eye movements, hand gestures, and body posture.
Proksemika (Proxemics)
A form of non-verbal communication referring to time and distance; includes formal time (clocks) or informal time (e.g., 'now,' 'later').
Pandama o Paghawak (Haptics)
One of the earliest forms of communication used to indicate positive emotions, sympathy, or shared feelings.
Paralanguage
A non-verbal form of communication involving the tone of voice, quality, and speed of speech.
Katahimikan o Kawalang-kibo
A meaningful silence used for thinking, preparation, or conveying resentment or hurt feelings.
Kapaligiran
The venue and its arrangement where communication happens; the location often implies the speaker's intention.
