During 600 to 1450 and later time periods apices were highly valued, and Indian ocean trade allowed them to be spread throughout regions.

Joint stock companies allowed for more trade in that the risk of exploration and commerce could be spread among people. Portugal begun an armed control of ports around the coast and trading post empires were introduced. Trading post empires also led to an increase in trade in the Indian ocean.
