Basically paying countries to listen to the U.S

Roosevelt Corollary

This document was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine. Instead of letting European powers scare Latin American countries into paying their debt, the U.S would interfere.

• This let the U.S play ‘regional policeman’

Panama Canal

A canal built through Panama (by Roosevelt) that let ships go through the Atlantic to the Pacific and. vice-versa. 

• Colombia (Panama’s og colonizer) didn’t approve of the construction 

• Panama revolted (for separate reasons)

• Panama wanted the canal

Platt Amendment

This document limited Cuba’s rights to make treaties and allowed the U.S to intervene in Cuban affairs

• This basically gave the U.S control of Cuba whenever they wanted 

• The Cubans didn’t like it 

Teller Amendment

This document stated that the U.S had no interest in taking control of Cuba

• This happened because the U.S wanted Cuba to be independent

• The Spanish didn’t like that and started war

Yellow Journalism

Sensational and often over-dramatized news stories used to attract people to buy the newspaper

• Sometimes details would be slightly altered or just changed completely.

Boxer Rebellion

The Boxers were Chinese nationalists who were angered by foreign involvement with China. (They Rebelled (??)) 

Open Door Policy 

This policy stated that all nations should have equal trade access to China. It showed that the U.S still wanted trade relations with China, even after it was annexed by Japan

Queen Liloukalani

The queen of Hawaii that wanted to bring power back to her people after the Bayonet Constitution.

• She fought the rest of her life to make them independent

• Was, sadly, eventually imprisoned and power was never restored

• Hawaii became a U.S territory in 1898

William H. Seward

The secretary of state that bought Alaska for 7.2 million $. People thought he was dumb for spending all that money on a frozen wasteland.

Avoiding involvement in the affairs of other countries

Imperialism

Making an empire by creating/colonizing colonies

Moral Diplomacy

Instead of paying countries, or threatening them with military power, this was focused on being diplomatic to other countries. Instead of using the other tactics, they would just diplomatically spread democracy.

Big Stick Diplomacy

Threatening another country with military action if they refuse to listen to the U.S
