The study of humans and all aspects of its being including its origin, fusing social sciences and natural sciences, and including the study of the remains of early human activities (artifacts).

Physical Anthropology

Biological anthropology; the study of humans from the biological perspective, requiring an understanding of concepts in biology and culture to explain how humans adapt and continuously evolve.

Archeology

Studies human cultures through the use of materials or artifacts of the past.

Anthropological Linguistics

Documents languages in terms of structure, use and acquisition.

Cultural Anthropology

Explores the patterns of societies and its beliefs, practices, and behavior in the contemporary setting.

Participant observation

A research methodology where the researcher is immersed in the day-to-day activities of the participants.

Bronislaw Malinowski

A proponent of participant observation whose fieldwork centered around the idea that the researcher should fully participate in the culture being studied as much as possible to best observe and record the practices occurring.

Multiculturalism

Describes the existence, acceptance, or promotion of multiple cultural traditions within the fixed boundaries.

Cultural Relativism

Argues that there should be no international or universal standards of culture.

Etic

An outsider's view; it is to understand culture from the point of view of a non-member of a culture.

Hawthorne Effect

Refers to people's tendency to behave differently when they become aware that they are being observed.

Emic

An insider's view; one needs to participate and fully integrate into everything about the culture.
