Organism
A structure that consists of a collection of organ systems.
Homeostasis
The process in health where all parts of the body function together.
Organ System
A level of organization consisting of related organs with a common function; there are 11 organ systems in the body.
Digestive System
An organ system that handles all aspects of taking in and breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating wastes, including organs of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Cell
The basic structural and functional unit of an organism, which is many billions of times more complex than molecules.
Cytologist
A trained specialist who can recognize about 210 different kinds of cells under light microscopy.
Chemical Level of Organization
The most basic level of organization, consisting of atoms, inorganic molecules (inorganic chemistry), and organic molecules (organic chemistry).

Levels of Organization Hierarchy
The sequence of body structural complexity ordered from smallest to largest: Chemical (Atomic, Molecular), Cellular, Tissue, Organ, System, and Organism.
