Knee Joint
A joint that connects the femur, tibia, and patella, allowing for movement and stability.
Unhappy Triad
ACL, MCL, and medial meniscus injury.
ACL Rupture Management
Focuses on restoring knee function, addressing psychological sport participation barriers, reducing further injury risk/osteoarthritis, and improving long-term QOL.
ACL injury prevention program
Plyometrics, strengthening, flexibility, agility, and proprioception/balance exercises.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS)
A broad term describing pain in the front of the knee and around the patella.
PFPS Symptoms
Dull pain at the front of the knee, increased pain with running, jumping, kneeling, or squatting, swelling, grinding sensations, and pain after prolonged sitting with a bent knee.
PFPS Causes
Weak hip and quad muscles, movement coordination impairments, tight ITB and hamstrings, flat feet, poor footwear, hypermobility, and overuse.
PFPS Interventions
Exercise therapy, foot orthoses, patellar taping, patient education, and combined interventions.
PFPS Exercise Interventions
Hip- and knee-targeted exercises.
Knee Assessments
ROM, strength (MMT/HHD), PROMs, and functional assessments.
Assessments for Athletic Populations
Balance tests, hop tests.
Assessments for Older/Clinical Populations
Balance tests, strength tests, and physical function/ADL assessments.
Exercise Physiologist's Role in Managing Knee Conditions
Working in prevention, rehabilitation, and chronic care, communicating with surgeons, physiotherapists, nurses, coaches, and other healthcare professionals.
