Health Psychology
The study of psychological and behavioral processes in health, illness, and healthcare.
Biopsychosocial Model
A model of health and illness that considers biological, psychological, and social factors.
Symptom Perception
The process of becoming aware of and interpreting bodily sensations.
Infrasound
Sound waves with frequencies below the lower limit of human audibility.
Placebo Effect
A beneficial effect produced by a treatment that cannot be attributed to the treatment itself, but to the patient's belief in it.
Nocebo Effect
A negative effect experienced due to the expectation of side effects from a treatment.
Illness Representations
Organized conceptions of individual illnesses, same as illness perceptions and common sense models of illness.
Identity (Illness Representation)
The abstract label or verbal tag we place on a set of symptoms.
Timeline (Illness Representation)
Beliefs about the duration of symptoms or the course of an illness.
Consequences (Illness Representation)
Beliefs about the personal impact or future consequences of an illness.
Cause (Illness Representation)
Beliefs about the perceived causal antecedents of an illness.
Control/Cure (Illness Representation)
Beliefs about what a person must do to recover and whether an illness can be cured.
Treatment Adherence
The extent to which a patient follows their prescribed treatment plan.
Appraisal Delay
The time it takes between recognizing a symptom and deciding something is not right.
Illness Delay
The time it takes between thinking a symptom might be a sign of illness and deciding to seek medical treatment.
Behavioral Delay
The time it takes between deciding to seek care and acting upon that decision.
Medical Delay
Delay in receiving medical care due to scheduling or treatment availability.
Weight Stigma
Stigma around being overweight or obese often attributed to lack of self control.
Seeking and Using Medical Treatment
People are less likely to seek medical treatment when they think that not much can be done about it.
Preventative Health Behaviors
Mistaken beliefs about the cause of condition can have an effect on your preventative health behaviors.
