During the Cold War NATO was focused on collective defense and the protection of its members from potential threats emanating from the Soviet Union. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the non-state actors, many new threats emerged. This severely affected national security.

An American military officer and statesman who served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. During WW II he was Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe.
