Transportation planning problems
Focuses on traffic condition forecasting, typically five (5) to 20 years from the present. These kind of analyses are often regional in scope
Macroscopic models
Based on the deterministic relationship of traffic flow, speed, and density in the traffic stream.
Transportation operations problems
Focuses on creating detailed analyses of small-scale problems, such as an individual road or intersection.
Microscopic models
Focuses on the movement of individual vehicles based on car-following and lane-changing theories.
Model calibration
A three-step strategy which includes capacity calibration, route choice calibration, and system performance calibration.
Private industrial organizations
Began to apply modeling and simulation as a decision support tool in the late 1940s.
System analysis
To gain a better understanding of a system’s behavior to improve its performance.
Acquisition and system acceptance
Involves questions and answers associated to buying and/or implementing a new system, which can possibly improve the business processes in an organization.
Research
The modeling and simulation of artificial environments to test the effects of different or multiple changes to system components.
Education and training
Intended to develop a greater understanding and the ability to apply business ideas, concepts, and techniques, either for a student or a trainee.
Business modeling and simulation
Well-designed simulation studies with concrete results can be used to drive change within organizations at all levels: operational, tactical, and strategic planning and execution.
Social science
Involves multiple disciplines that study different human aspects by applying scientific methods.
Social science modeling and simulation
Allows the replication of human capabilities and reactions toward different scenarios, as it assists in the analysis of multiple hypotheses and diverse results.
Statistical modeling
A traditional method of discovery and interpretation of patterns in a large number of events.
Formal modeling
Provides rigorous analytic specifications and mathematical methodologies for specific components, such as people and their preferences.
Behavior modeling
Models human activity and behavior from a psychological aspect.
Social network modeling
Encompasses social behaviors by considers the different relationships derived from statistical analysis of relational data.
