Blind Intersections and Alleys

Scanning

Scanning your surroundings (keeping your eyes moving) includes keeping a safe distance around your vehicle.

To avoid last minute moves, scan the road 10–15 seconds ahead of your vehicle so you  can  see  hazards  early.

Tailgating

• Or merge into another lane in order to prevent a collision with tailgater

• Towing a trailer or carrying a heavy load 

• You see a bus, school bus, or a vehicle with a placard at railroad crossings. These vehicles must stop at railroad crossings. 

• Merging onto a freeway.

At 55 mph, it takes about 400 feet to react and bring your vehicle to a complete stop

At 35 mph, it takes about 210 feet to react and bring your vehicle to a complete stop

Tailgating

Many drivers follow too closely (tailgate) and

are not able to see as far ahead as they should because the vehicle ahead

blocks their view.

To  avoid 

tailgating, use the “3 second rule”:

Line Colors

Solid yellow lines-    Mark the center of a road used for two-way traffic.

Broken yellow lines- Indicate  that you  may  pass  if  the  broken  line  is next to your driving lane.

Two solid yellow lines indicate no passing.

Center Left Turn Lane 

A  center  left  turn  lane  is  located  in the  middle  of  a  two-way  street  and  is marked  on  both  sides  by  two  painted lines.

Bicycle Lane 

A bicycle lane is a designated traffic lane

for bicyclists defined by pavement markings

and signage
