What is an STI?
An infection that is transmitted via bodily fluids during sexual intercourse or contact
What is HIV?
Human immunodeficiency virus is a pathogen that can cause an STI
The virus infects the body’s immune system and decreases the body’s ability to fight infection, which eventually leads to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency virus)
What are the methods of transmission of HIV?
HIV can be spread by infected bodily fluids:
Sharing needles with an infected person
Blood transfusions with infected blood
During pregnancy (from mother to fetus across the placenta)
Breastfeeding
Unprotected sexual intercourse with infected person
How can the spread of STIs be controlled?
Having protected sex (using condoms)
Getting tested if you had unprotected sex or sex with multiple partners
Raising awareness through education programs
Never sharing needles and making sure medical equipment is sterile
Screening for HIV during pregnancy
