Urea-formaldehyde
An adhesive often used in the manufacture of timber-based boards.
Resorcinol
A durable, waterproof adhesive used in timber construction.
Dressing
A preparation technique used to smooth and square a piece of timber.
Thicknessing
A preparation process used to achieve a consistent thickness across a piece of timber.
Widening Joints
Methods used to join timber edge-to-edge, including dowelled butt, tongue and groove, rebate, groove and feather, and biscuit joints.
Framing Joints
Joinery used for framework, including mitre, halving, dowelled, box pin, mortise and tenon, and bridle joints.
Carcase Joints
Joinery used for the main body or box of a piece, including rebate, scribed, dovetail, and housing joints.
Marquetry
A decorative construction technique involving the application of veneers to form patterns.
Intarsia
A construction technique involving wood inlay to create a mosaic-like image.
Dry Cramp
An assembly process where a project is fitted together with clamps but without adhesive to check the fit.
Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
The national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian education and training.
Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
An entity such as TAFE NSW that provides industry training and issues qualifications within the AQF.
Preliminary Course
A 120-hour course focusing on project work and industry study to provide a broad range of skills.
HSC Course
A 120-hour course consisting of the development of a Major Project and an industry study.
