7 considerations of production planning
-AUDIENCE: The driving factor for design, budget, and production
-PURPOSE: Establishes the physical form of the piece
-USE: How the piece will be used
-QUALITY: Different printers can deliver different quality
-QUANTITY: Quantity is determined by the client and their needs
-OTHER PROCESSES: Mailing, binding, special effects
-SCHEDULING: Always schedule backward from the deadline for delivery.

Determining correct QUANTITIES and Determine QUALITY needed
Determining correct QUANTITIES
• PRICE BREAK — Printing cost per unit decreases with an increase in quantity.
• Quote quantities 1.5, 2, and 3 times greater than the projected amount to give clients a Good idea of price breaks.
• Digital presses are the same cost per unit at any quantity
• Digital/On-demand vs. Offset lithography printing. For quantities under 1000, a digital press may be more economical.
• Printers allow a 10% over/under tolerance for print runs under 10,000
Determine QUALITY needed
Four main divisions of printing quality
1. Basic
2. Commercial
3. Premium
4. Showcase
Speck a job
• is the process of filling out and submitting a specified proposal for printing work. A printer will use this as a guideline for determining a price for printing services.
• speck a job with 2-5 different
printers. This way, you can see which printer
will give you a better deal.
SHORT ANSWER
Discuss 3 things that we as designers need to
Take into consideration when designing for print
for a client or specific target audience.
-The type of client and/or audience would determine the overall budget of the job
-Who the audience is can change the quality of the piece. For example, a direct mail advertising a sale for a mattress store can be of a different quality than a business card for a sales representative or a catalog for a luxury car.
-Consult with the client about the quantities that are needed
